This is a demo version of a song I'm gonna submit to a comp about pizza. I wish I was joking, but I'm really not.

This love affairs been going on for 22 years
every sunday tuesday friday we raise slices and cheers
because we could eat a 20” pie, in 15 minutes.

We’d carry boxes home between the handlebars of our bikes
sprinkle oregano and red pepper flakes on every bite
and even though we don’t have it together anymore I still remember the times when we did.

Because pizza for us was a prize
we each ate 4 slices no matter the size
and pizza for us was a treat,
clipping coupons off the back of Pathmark receipts
because pizza for you was a little bit like
an escape from grocery shopping every night
and pizza for me was the perfect excuse
to sit around all night watching movies with you

and sometimes when I have money to spare
I make a pick-up order and refuse to care
that I’m reenacting a thousand dates that we used to have.
And when I’m scrounging for crusts in my favorite cans
I’ll get a bite or two with cheese and I’ll understand
that pizza will always have my back in a way that nobody does.
